Strife Surfer

June 15, 2012

Though we already have our summer vacation planned, I am regretting that I did not hold off until the world got a little more chaotic and the fallout from worsening economies, simmering wars and political meltdowns had a positive effect on the cost of tourist services.

We are going to Lebanon for our summer holiday. Lebanon, due to its ties and proximity to Syria, could make for an interesting few weeks. I have never been in a country at war so perhaps I will get a couple of original shots for my FB wall (as opposed to just at my wall). I did not choose Lebanon because of the chaos there but because it was the most central location for the rest of our family to gather. We booked our travel prior to the recent flare-ups and now with Beirut in the news, it has added a heightened degree of anticipation to the trip that I find both exciting and disturbing.

And with Spain also teetering economically I am wondering if there will be some great values there for the strife surfer. Perhaps I should be looking for bargain hostels in Burgos, serious discounts in Sitges or incredible car hire in Ibiza? If I am going to be a strife surfer, it seems that going someplace where there is economic turbulence might be a better choice than going someplace where there is violent political turbulence.

In any event, I will know in a few months if I need to add an additional word to the perfect vacation equation. Sun, surf, sand and strife.
