Wiltshire, England. Expat Alley Interview. Writer & Blogger. Dori Thomas Peaple.

March 10, 2010

How old are you, where are you from, where are you living now and what took you there?

I’m 42 and I’m from Georgia, USA. I live in Wiltshire, which is in southwest England. I came here when I got married. My husband is British and was born and raised in Wiltshire.

How long have you lived there and how long will you stay?  What keeps you there?

I’ve lived here nearly four years. As for how long we will stay here, well we just keep an open mind about it. Who knows what tomorrow brings. We will probably be here for quite a while longer, but someday we may go back to the United States so that my husband can get the expat experience.

What do you do to make a living?

I’m a freelance writer, blogger, and housewife.

Describe your average weekday and weekend day.

On weekdays, I get up at about 6:45am and hang out with my husband before he goes to work. I make his lunch and then he’s out of the house by 7am. I watch the news and have breakfast. On days when I feel like it, I’ll exercise before I eat. I get dressed and by about 8:30 or 9:00am I’m at work with my blogging and writing. I take breaks to do things around the house a couple of times during the day. Then at 3:30pm I put away the laptop and start to think about cooking dinner. The rest of the evening is spent with my husband.

Some weekdays I go out with my husband when he has days in the field. When he goes to appointments, I’ll tag along and take my camera. I photograph a lot of the Wiltshire and Somerset countryside. I share a lot of the photographs on my blog.

On weekends we go into town sometimes to do errands. We may eat out. Sometimes on particularly fun weekends, we go into London for some fun at a concert or play or something. We just mostly play it by ear. Nothing is ever set for weekends.

What skills have you learned while living abroad?

I’ve learned how to adapt to things better.

What are you missing (professionally) by not being in your home country?

I don’t know.

If you could live anywhere, where would that be and why?

Somewhere close to the beach, because I love the sound of the ocean and when I’m there, I’m always much more laid back.

What is your favorite gadget that makes your work life abroad better?

Definitely my laptop

Do you have a favorite book that inspired you to travel or consider a different way of living?

No, I don’t have a favourite book that inspired me to travel, but I love going to new places as I read a book. I think that my love of travel and interest in living in a different way, in a different place, has always been with me. I have had wanderlust for as long as I can remember.

Other than your blog From A Yellow House in England, do you have a favorite expat blog?

I like Expat Alley. And then I usually read a variety of other blogs.
